Information on the Elberfelds in America comes from:
The following history is supported by the previous resources.
The early German records were mostly church records written in Latin. Reading Latin hand-written in old German script is a challenge. Many of the names are abbreviated in the original sources and are open to interpretation. Civil records were often written in the language of the country ruling the region at the time. For these reasons, an individual may be referred to by several different names in the different documents. Often children in the same family were given same first names. Sometimes children were referred to by their middle names - even if they had unique first names. As they grew older, documents may refer to them just by their middle names. Names in () in the material below are other ways of referring to the same individual.
In the 1700s, Elberfeld families were spread across what is now Germany. The Elberfelds that came to Pomeroy, OH originally came from Lambsheim, a town too small to be found on most maps of Germany. Larger cities in the region of Lambsheim include Frankenthal, Mannheim, Worms, Heidelberg, and further to the north, Frankfurt. The maps below show Lambsheim and the other small towns around it.

This map is from Rembe's book (LDS Microfilm 1181988)

This is a modern road map showing Hettenleidelheim to the west, Bad Durkheim to the south west, and Grossniedescheim to the north of Lambsheim.
From the IGI listings, we know that Sebastiani (Jois Sebastiani) Elberfeld and Mariae Margarethae (Maria Catharina) (Margretha) (Maria) were parents of
According to Rembe's 1971 book on Lambsheim, written in German, Peter Elberfeld, a Catholic, and Anna Maria (last name unknown to Rembe, but probably Hermaennin), born about 1723, died in Lambsheim May 13 1802. The dates refer to Anna Maria.
According to the IGI records, their children were:
The dates match up within a few years, and the names match up
According to Rembe, Leonhard Elberfeld [Joes Leonardus in the IGI records], a Catholic, and the son of Peter Elberfeld, [Tagl.,Ack - I don't know these - JKE] born about 1742, living in 1815, married Susanna Anna Margareta Kuppelmeyer, a Catholic, born August 8, 1762 and died March 15, 1807 at the age of 44. Their children, all Catholics, were:
There is no IGI information to confirm much about Leonhard's family.
Johannes Elberfeld, son of Leonhard, grandson son of Peter, and possible great grandson of Sebastiani, was the father of the Elberfelds who settled in Pomeroy, OH.
According to the IGI, Joan Elberfeld married Maria Margareth Muellerin on April 9, 1815. This matches the dates and wife listed in Rembe. In Volume 2, Rembe states that Joh. E., a Catholic, married in Lambsheim on March 30, 1815, M. Marg. Muller, born Grossniedescheim Aug 23, 1789 (daughter of Jakob Muller and Charlotte Krause)
The children of Joannis (Joan) (Johannes) Elberfeld and Maria Margareth (Margarethae) (Maria Margareta) Mueller (Muiller)(Muellerin) (Müller) were:

Sebastiani Elberfeld and Maria Margaretha Cannii were parents of Peter Elberfeld, who married Anna Maria Hermaennin. Leonhard Elberfeld, son of Peter, married Susanna Anna Margareta Kuppelmeyer and had a son, Joannis. Joannis Elberfeld married Maria Margareth Muller and had nine children. Petrus, Joannes, Petrus, and Magdelena all died young. Eva, Frederick, Philip and Jacob all moved to Pomeroy, Ohio. Christina's history is unknown.
To view all the descendants I have found of Sebastiani Elberfeld, please visit http://www.j-elberfeld.com/KidElberfeld/html/d0000/g0000042.html#I02694 The files here contain hundreds of notes and the sources of my information - which may still need corrections.
Meigs County Ohio History Book states that Jacob Elberfeld of Lambshein Canton, Frankenthahahl, Rhemkreis, Bavaria, came to America in his twentieth year, arriving in New York on August 15, 1854. After a journey via Baltimore, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and thence to Marietta by boat, Mr. Elberfeld arrived in Pomeroy by wagon with his brother-in-law, John Reuter, on September 10.
John Reuter (spelled Rider on most documents) was the husband of Eva Elberfeld, the older sister of the three brother who left Lambsheim in the 1850s. Based on naturalization papers, John came from Havre, Germany to New York City on May 14, 1841. John was initially in Lawrence County at least through 1846. Frederick Elberfeld came over from Germany on the Rose Standish and landed in New York City on Nov 21, 1853. He may have been conscripted into the Austrio-Prussian Army and was fleeing to America to avoid serving. (Elba Gillman - source) Frederick served in the Civil war in the 1st. WV Cavalry as a hospital nurse. A copy of Frederick's service record shows two AWOLs and a desertion charge. Jacob and Philip had established family waiting for them in America.
A passenger list for a ship arriving at the Port of New York on Aug 15, 1854 from London (Liverpool), the American Union with a Captain Alexander Kelly, lists Philip Eberfeld 25 male grocer Mecklenburg , and Jacob Eberfeld 23. According the naturalization papers, Jacob and Philip arrived in Pomeroy about a week apart in September of 1854. [I have not yet found Jacob and Philip listed on any published or on-line passenger lists- JKE]

Thanks to Mary Paullin Elberfeld Whitman, I have the following paper which I believe confirms the birth and death dates of the parents, and the years the three brothers came to America. If anyone can read the hand-written German, please let me know what it really says. (I'll even send you a copy on paper, if that will help!)
John Reuter is listed as a miner and Frederick is listed as a stone mason in the early census reports. Jacob eventually started Elberfeld's Store. Philip also helped create a competing store with George Eiselstein in 1868. In 1878 Philip moved his family to Cincinnati, where he is listed as a cobbler and shoe merchant. It may be that setting up competing stores caused a family rift because there was little contact among the three Elberfeld lines until very recently.
Once Jacob, Philip, Frederick and Eva settled in Pomeroy, the Elberfeld clan started to grow.
PHILIP ELBERFELD was born April 28, 1831 in Lambsheim Co., Frankenthal, Reinkreit, Bayern (Bavaria) Germany, and died January 18, 1916 in Cincinatti OH. He married KATHERINE (MARIA KATHRYN) EISELSTEIN October 18, 1856 in Pomeroy, OH, daughter of JOHANN EISELSTEIN and MARIA EISELSTEIN. She was born February 16, 1836 in Germany, and died January 05, 1917 in Cincinatti OH.

Children of PHILIP ELBERFELD and KATHERINE EISELSTEIN are:
EVA ELBERFELD was born October 07, 1815 in Christened, Sankt Stefanus Katholisch, Lambsheim, Pfalz, Bayern, and died February 21, 1903 in Pomerory, Meigs Co., Salisbury Twp, OH. She married JOHN REUTER 1838 in Lambsheim, Pfz, Bayern.
Children of EVA ELBERFELD and JOHN REUTER are:FREDERICK ELBERFELD was born 1827 in Germany. He married MARY STROHMEYER February 12, 1855 in Meigs County, Ohio, daughter of FREDERICK STROHMEYER and DOROTHEA MILLER. She was born 1835 in Germany.
Children of FRIDERICK ELBERFELD and MARY STROHMEYER are:JACOB ELBERFELD was born June 19, 1834 in Christened, St. Stefanus Katholisch, Lambshein, Pfalz Co. Bayern, and died July 21, 1887 in Mulberry Ave, Pomeroy, OH (Stroke). He married ANNA MARY GENHEIMER January 24, 1860 in Meigs County, Ohio, daughter of JOHN GENHEIMER and KATHERINE SCHLAIGEL. She was born March 27, 1840 in Meigs County, OH, and died July 13, 1913 in Pomerory, Meigs Cnty, Salisbury Twp, OH.
Children of JACOB ELBERFELD and ANNA GENHEIMER are:The children of Philip and Jacob are well documented. The children of Frederick and Eva are compiled from different sources that have conflicting information. This list is a compromise. Any definite information and corrections to any of the lists would be appreciated.
Philip Elberfeld married Katherine Eiselstein. According to her death certificate, Catherine Eiselstein was born Feb. 16, 1836 in Germany, and died Jan. 5, 1907 in St. Louis, MO. On the death certificate, filled out by her daughter, her parents are listed as "unknown." Family notes show she was born in Oppau, a very small town just a few miles east of Lambsheim. She and Philip were married Oct 16, 1856 in Pomeroy, OH, according to the court marriage records.
Determining her parents beyond a shadow of a doubt has been a challenge, since very little is known about her. A hand-written note in the family papers shows her father was John Eiselstein, and her mother ___?___ Deus - but the handwriting is hard to interpret. It also states she came to America and arrived in NY in 1838. Unfortunately, no Eiselstein in Meigs County matches this information exactly.
Johannes Eiselstein (1774-1834) and Maria Katherine Bauman (1776-1834) had eight children. Their eldest child, Johannes (1799-1885) was married three times, and in 1840 brought his entire family to America. Their fifth child, Leonhard Eiselstein, married in 1831 and came to America in 1843. Their eighth child, Conrad Eiselstein, came to America also in 1840 and married in 1841. All three settled in the Pomeroy, OH, area.
Of these three families of Eiselsteins in Meigs County, OH, only Johannes (1799-1885) has a daughter of Catherine Eiselstein's age - Maria Kathryn (1837). In the pasesenger list for the Ch. Colombe, which arrived in Baltimore on July 31, 1940, the family of Joh. Eiselstein is listed, but the daughter of Catherine's age is listed as Elizabeth. Since another, older daughter is also listed as Elizabeth, this seems to be an error. The 1850 census, which lists them as the Irelstine family, the same children appear, but with a Catherine (in place of the young Elizabeth on the pasenger list) who is the right age to be my great grandmother. Unfortunately, the date of arrival in America and the mother's name do not match.
IGI data lists Johnannes' three wives as Schwartz, Goennheimer, and Eiselstein - none of whom match the note listing her as Deus. One researcher has Maria Kathryn, daughter of Johannes Eislestein, as marrying Philip Elberfeld, and this is how I have it listed in my current genealogy. However, I am constantly looking for a confirming piece of information that will remove any doubt. Any information on this puzzle would be appreciated.
There are several other early Elberfeld immigrants that I cannot connect to the Lambsheim Elberfelds.
Clement Elberfeld lived in Ironton, Ohio, and fought in the Civil War. He appears in the census for 1860. There is a slight chance he is Clemens August Elberfeld, born in Bakum, Oldenburg, Germany in 1813. His wife might be Bernadina Elberfeld, who died in Ironton June 8, 1884. It is interesting he ended up so close to Pomeroy, yet does NOT seem to be a close relative. His last name is often spelled Eberfeld.
Another Elberfeld family started by Adam Elberfeld were also early settlers in the Ironton area. Adam, the immigrant, had a son Adam born in 1860 who died in Ironton on Nov 11, 1934. Somehow these two families must be related, but I have no information on it.
A Julius Elberfeld, born in Germany in 1874, had children, Josephine and Ruth E., who died in Cincinnati, OH.
August Elberfeld, born in Germany in 1863, had a son, Julius, who was born in Ohio in 1897.
There were Elberfeld families in Wisconsin and New York City. One Elberfeld family lived in Tonawanda, NY for a time.
Currently there are about 80 Elberfelds with listed phone numbers on the Internet. Part of my genealogy challenge is to see how they are all related to each other, although I know think the connections might be several generations back in Germany.
If you have ANY information, or any interest in this information, please contact me at JElberfeld@AOL.COM. Since I use Family Tree Maker to store this information, I am looking for:Thanks.

Meigs County Ohio History Book THE ELBERFELDS It is recalled through oral tradition and family records that Jacob Elberfeld of Lambshein Canton, Frankenthahahl, Rhemkreis, Bavaria, came to America in his twentieth year, arriving in New York on August 15, 1854. After a journey via Baltimore, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and thence to Marietta by boat, Mr. Elberfeld arrived in Pomeroy by wagon with his brother-in-law, John Reuter, on September 10. Working in the coal mines near Monkey Run as a stone-mason making water boxes, Mr. Elberfeld saved his money, enrolled in the Pomeroy Academy, and also worked as a clerk in a store. Entering into business for himself on October 1, 1864, by selling goods to the public, Mr. Elberfeld started a mercantile business that survives to the present. Mr. Elberfeld, on January 24, 1860, married Anna Mary Genheimer.
